About Oriental Cravings
Oriental Cravings (OC) is made up of an Australia-based duo, Quincy and Yujin, hailing from Indonesia and Malaysia respectively. The moniker was borne from a mutual hunger for good music and food, making future beats with a side of red meat. Whether you think the name reflects an Asian identity in a foreign land, or reaffirms the convergence of east-west influences, everyone agrees that the armchair theorising stops when the music is played. The duo makes polished future bass that avoids the usual genre -or cultural- trappings, and have been gaining critical plaudits as a result. Oriental Cravings’ releases have been carried by forward-looking tastemakers like Future Bass Records (Utopia), OTODAYO Records (Sonic), and The South East Grind (Python).

February 17th, 2017 – Singapore singer-songwriter Jean Tan’s newest single release “Crowns” is dropping this February via Umami Records. Produced by Kevin Foo of Beep Studios (Linying, Charlie Lim, Miguel Antonio), “Crowns” blends breezy folk guitar with a beautiful electronic soundscape, forming a lush accompaniment to Jean’s soulful vocals. The result is a tête-à-tête that makes for easy listening and unwinding, while edging at a sense of something deeper.

“Crowns” is the imagery of things we hold dear in life, and the song reflects the inner struggles with loss when our hands are emptied of them just at our prime. This realistic optimism belies the song’s relaxed atmosphere and finds its source from Jean’s perspective —

“Life is never just linear, and while it feels like it’s going downhill – life works in cycles, and what goes down must come up. In due season, when the stars in the universe align – somehow, things are made right again.”

Listen and download “Crowns” single on all major music platforms this Friday. “Crowns” MV will be released in March 2017.

Jean is currently working on her new EP “Blooms”, set for release in 2017. Expect more songs from the EP to drop in the course of this year – including her next single release this April.

About Jean Tan:
Jean is a singer-songwriter who writes with a blend of folk and other influences. She has performed at the National Stadium and Gardens by the Bay for SEA Games 2015, having written a song for the games called ‘Colours’. She also opened for Michael W. Smith on his Singapore tour in 2013, and has performed at public events (e.g. Singapore Night Festival 2016, Riverside Flow) as well as album launches (e.g. JAWN, Sarah Cheng-DeWinne).

A poet and word-smith, Jean often weaves her life challenges into her songs and uses her music for social good. She has had to undergo multiple operations and illness in life, and has performed and shared her story at schools, teenage homes, art spaces, and at events by organisations such as Halogen Foundation, World Vision, Relief Singapore, and Architects of Life. Many have been inspired by her life.

We throw our crowns down
To the ground
Hollow, they holler their empty sound

Throw our crowns down
The dirt ground
Things that we’ve laid there will come around

Throw our crowns down
The dirt ground
Arms are wide open, our hearts unbound

Throw our crowns down
To the ground
All that we’ve lost one day will be found

It’s hard to let go, hard to release
Feel like you might have lost your worth
But it’s traded for peace
All that glitters isn’t gold, you should know
There’s nothing to prove
So be what you choose

We throw our crowns down

Throw our crowns down
The dirt ground
All that was lost one day will be found
